love yourself as you are; YOU ARE ENOUGH (15 January 2016)

The #imflattered campaign rejoices in showing women in clothes they have been told aren't "flattering" to them.

“The word flattering, as a stand alone, is not a bad one,” Mallorie Dunn says on her blog. “
The definition is pleasing or gratifying…
But [now, contextually] having ‘flattering clothing’ basically means, ‘That makes you look thin.’

“Specifically in the land of women, we are told every day – subconsciously and blatantly – that we should be smaller. We should have no visible fat, cellulite, or imperfections.”

#imflattered reclaims the word flattering and reclaims women's bodies for themselves.

This is me inspiring my young nieces, my young cousins, and women all over the world to love themselves as they are, because YOU ARE ENOUGH

This story reminded me of another article I saw recently, about a Pilates instructor, Anula Maiberg, flouting the expected stereotype; "Instagram feeds hijacked by svelte fitness models who have mastered the selfie".

"With her soft curves and toned—but not chiseled—muscles, she has spent her fair share of time pondering her body shape. As an instructor, she says, there’s pressure to look a certain way and she doesn’t fit that mold.  In fact, she still doesn’t consider herself a “fitness person,” as she puts it, but is so convinced of the transformative power of Pilates that she’s devoted her life to it."
